Governor Review: Testing Your Patience

Governor Review Testing Your Patience

Manoj Bajpai’s dismal performance cannot save a decidedly another clumsy programme driven retelling of one of India’s money records

Promise A dramatic retelling of the 1991 Golden Promise

In 1990 and 1992 RBI Governor S Venkitaraman steered India away from catastrophic economic meltdown by choosing hard to pledge US gold reserves Now this was not a one sided flow it needed the convincing of Chandrasekhar the incoming High Council of Ministers Pharashtra Vravis and the high government accused second on Indian records has been ripe for dramatic investigation.

Manoj Bajpai steps into the role of the titular chief minister complete with an incongruous Tamil accent and an air of unwavering seriousness The film establishes incoming Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s enthusiastic support for the governor’s wishes as a critical push an odd narrative choice as economic conservatives are historically wary of unprecedented moves.

Timing Irony or design?

Depending on your angle the film’s projection is now either impeccably timed or deeply ironic. Economists warned of a glistening secondary distress and with the renewed rhetoric of gold protectionism the Prime Minister should have acted in a cautious well timed statement. But subtleties and nuances are not the strengths of the film. Being careful with a true analysis of the other is really not his burden.

History Wrong The Manmohan Singh Problem

The intention of the film is unmistakably clear in its portrayal of Manmohan Singh  the really high liberalization architect who transformed India in ways that people who lived since 1991 through pre technology can hardly recognize. Here Singh is seen as an obedient recipient while the chief minister (played through Naushad Mohammad Kunju wins over his deputy) applauds firm neutrality as if giving him a gift .

Bhiku Mhatre Renovation

The visionary governor inexplicably leads Manoj Bajpai’s own iconic Bhiku Mhatre away from the truth hanging his feet from a high rise taking lifestyle classes from a clever secretary and learning the value of gold from his frugal wife (Madhu). Only he shouts in the air Who is the king of Mumbai?

Journalist Substory Laughing Evil

Shown through Adah Sharma an intrepid reporter seemingly the only person to casually call an intern popat even if she smells rat threatens to expose the biggest story of her time. Her helpless editing which plays along with her sudden onslaught of right and wrong judgment is just hilarious. This raises the perennial question when does Hindi cinema even get to the basics of journalism right?

Propaganda Aesthetics

Like the Accidental Prime Minister before him the Prime Minister embraces the aesthetics of propaganda. The storytelling is as basic as it is with clunky pc graphics replacing all of the real vista. The Governor himself does not blink as he leads the cat and mouse fun correcting visitors snoring and preparing aircraft for precious cargo. And there can be a lot extra where it came from.

Verdict For those who want to believe anything

The Governor is a great size for those instances  when as the title of this assessment suggests human beings are willing to accept the truth with all that Manoj Bajpai higher qualifies.
