Resident Evil Movie Review 2026: Cast, Story, OTT, Director and Rating
The Resident Evil
franchise is back with another reboot, but this time the movie takes a somewhat
different route. Instead of continuing the earlier film series, director Zach
Cregger has created a new story that takes inspiration from the world and
feel of the games.
The film stars Austin
Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier who gets caught up in a dangerous
situation while making a delivery to a hospital in Raccoon City. From there,
what should have been a normal night turns into a fight for survival.
The movie was released in cinemas on September 18, 2026.

The film is being
described as a reinvention of the franchise rather than a continuation of the
previous movie series.
Resident Evil 2026 Cast
Austin Abrams plays the
central character, Bryan. He is joined by Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul
Walter Hauser and Johnno Wilson.
Abrams is probably
the biggest reason the film works as well as it does. Several reviews have
pointed out that his performance gives Bryan enough personality to carry much
of the movie.
The supporting cast
includes familiar names, although some of them have comparatively smaller
roles.
Who Directed Resident Evil?
The movie is
directed by Zach Cregger, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay
Hatten.
Cregger is known for
films such as Barbarian and Weapons, so expectations were already
fairly high when he took over the Resident Evil reboot.
His approach here is
different from simply trying to recreate the earlier Resident Evil movies. The
film instead tries to capture the feeling of being inside a survival-horror
game while telling a new story.
What Is Resident Evil 2026 About?
The story follows
Bryan, a medical courier working in and around Raccoon City.
He is given a
delivery that takes him toward a hospital, but things quickly go wrong. What
starts as an ordinary job turns into a much bigger situation involving an
outbreak and a fight to stay alive.
The interesting part
is that Bryan isn't introduced as a typical action hero. He is an ordinary
person who suddenly finds himself dealing with a situation he clearly wasn't
prepared for.
That makes some of
his reactions quite funny. He panics, makes mistakes and tries to figure things
out as the story moves forward.
The film also takes
some inspiration from the Resident Evil 2 game, although it does not
directly adapt that game's story.
What Works in the Movie?
The biggest strength is probably its pace.
At around 90
minutes, the film doesn't spend too much time getting to the main action. It
moves quickly and keeps changing the situation around Bryan.
The combination of
horror and humor also works surprisingly well. Instead of taking itself
completely seriously, the movie occasionally lets Bryan's awkward reactions
provide some lighter moments.
Austin Abrams is
another strong point. He gives the character a slightly different personality
from the usual unstoppable horror protagonist.
Early reviews have
generally been positive. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists 95% critics score
and 91% audience score, although these numbers can change as more reviews
and audience ratings come in.
Where Does Resident Evil Fall Short?
The movie isn't perfect.
One of the main
complaints from reviews is that the ending feels less satisfying than the
rest of the film. The first part builds up Bryan's character and keeps the
story moving, but some critics felt that the final section doesn't completely
deliver on that setup.
The supporting characters also don't always get enough time. Some
are introduced mainly to move the story forward rather than being developed
properly.
Another possible
issue is that viewers expecting a very serious or traditional Resident Evil
adaptation may find the movie's humor and unusual tone a little unexpected.
So, whether it works
for you may depend partly on what you want from a Resident Evil movie.
Resident Evil 2026 OTT Release: Where Can You Watch It?
At the moment, Resident
Evil is not available on streaming platforms in India. Just Watch currently
lists it as unavailable for streaming.
The movie is currently playing in cinemas.
As for OTT, Netflix
is expected to become its subscription streaming home because of Sony's
existing arrangement with the platform, but Sony and Netflix have not
announced an official streaming date yet. Current reports are only estimating a
late-2026 or early-2027 window.
So, for now, there is no confirmed Netflix release date.
Is Resident Evil 2026 Worth Watching?
If you enjoy horror
movies, video-game adaptations and fast-paced survival stories, Resident
Evil has quite a bit to offer.
It isn't trying to be the same movie as the earlier adaptations.
Instead, it focuses on one character, keeps the story moving and mixes horror
with humor.
The short runtime is
also helpful. There isn't much unnecessary padding, and the movie gets into the
main story fairly quickly.
However, don't go
into it expecting a completely serious horror film or a scene-by-scene
adaptation of the games. This is Cregger's own take on the franchise.
Resident Evil 2026 Overall Rating
Our Rating: 3.5/5
Story: 3.5/5
Acting: 4/5
Direction: 4/5
Horror: 3.5/5
Entertainment: 4/5
Ending: 3/5
Overall, Resident
Evil is a fun and energetic reboot with a strong central performance from
Austin Abrams. Its biggest weakness is that the ending doesn't feel quite as
complete as the rest of the movie.
Still, the film manages to give the long-running franchise a fresh
start without simply copying what came before.
Final Verdict
Resident Evil (2026) is a fast, entertaining horror-action reboot
that works best when it embraces its game-like atmosphere and Austin Abrams'
performance. The story has a few rough edges, especially toward the end, but
there is enough fun here to make it worth considering for fans of the franchise
and the genre.
Note: OTT availability and review scores can change as the movie's theatrical run continues.
