The Petition and Background

The petition was filed through Mumbai-based activist Santosh Daundkar, who had protested the removal of the coastal regulation zone (CRZ) assigned to the mission. Daundkar argued that the approval violated environmental regulations and coastal area guidelines.

Notably, the activist had earlier approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had already rejected his appeal in September 2025. Following the setback, Daundkar moved the case to the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court's Observations

During the hearing, senior advocate Shoeb Alam, representing the petitioner, argued that the case really should not be treated differently as it involved a particular film megastar. He also revealed that Daundkar had earlier exposed the Adarsh housing scam and turned out to be a decent worker in his own right.

The bench, however, made it clear that Shah Rukh Khan's film star fame had no reference to his selection. "We are in no way motivated by all this," Justice Joymalya Bagchi discovered during the course of the proceedings.
