Dhurandhar 2 & Border 2: The Sequel Supremacy

 Overview: A Resurgent Industry

The first half of 2026 witnessed a growth in the Hindi film industry, with audiences embracing films across genres, languages and budgets Strong theatrical footprint, breakout regional successes and welcome go of comedy helped address shaky confidence in the industry after several years

According to Kamal Gianchandani, President of the Multiplex Association of India, "the penetration rate for the industry has increased through at least 10%, and the cash register workplace, we estimate, may be up with at least sixteen-17% occupancy, if not surplus now."

What worked: Diversity drives success

Star-studded blockbusters dominate

Sunny Deol's Border 2 emerged as one of the most important hits of the year, even as Dhurandhar The Revenge became the highest grossing Hindi film of 2026 so far. Comedy Week

The comedy was well received by the audience. Akshay Kumar’s reunion with Priyadarshan in Bhoot Bangla paid off handsomely on the container workplace, while Welcome to the Jungle endured its prevailing flow.

A wide spectrum of success

Cinepolis India managing director Devang Sampath reveals the most encouraging fashion:

"Dhurandhar 2, Seema 2, Bhoot Bangla did well, but the real thing for me is how broad the success has been. The commercial effort has come from all kinds of films, across no languages, not just two budgets."

The surprise heat: The main hit will be back

One of the biggest surprises of the year has been the main Vaapas Aaunga by Imtiaz Ali. Despite a modest opening, strong word of mouth gradually helped the film gain momentum and move towards hit reputation.

Reflecting on the film's journey, Imtiaz Ali had earlier said, "It was the target audience who took the film to heart. Somewhere the campaign had started. But people were proving it wrong."

What Didn't Work: Critical Praise, Commercial Failure

Despite positive reviews and strong themes, several well-reviewed films failed to generate ticket sales:

• O'Romeo - Vishal Bhardwaj

• Chand Mera Dil – starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya

• What – Anurag Kashyap

• Bharat Bhagya Vidhata - Kangana Ranaut
